Frozen Lakes â„–5: From Blue to Green

The different and sometimes quite abstract colors on the ice are created by a combination of natural factors. White or opaque ice results from a lot of air bubbles trapped in the ice. The ice may also have a greenish tint due to algae or other plant matter frozen within. Clear or transparent ice appears blue when the water freezes slowly without any impurities present. The color of the ice can also be affected by changing temperatures and lighting conditions.
